I am available for in person and virtual lessons. I teach ages 5 and up at multiple skill levels. My teaching style is heavily influenced by my background in Music Therapy.
As a teacher, my aim is to help students unlock the mystery and the meaning in music. I approach each lesson with a willingness to listen and adapt to each students’ learning styles. I employ a holistic approach to teaching and try to shape lesson plans according to the students specific musical goals.
For me, seeing the lightbulb come on in a lesson when a student really connects with a musical idea or concept is exciting and key to inspiration. With input from my students and gentle guidance by me we explore concepts of phrasing, rhythm, a song or piece’s character, technique, breath work and more. I try to give students a tool bag from which they can grab skills like lead sheet reading, sight-reading, improvisation, accompaniment, music theory and transposition.
In my own musical life I am well versed in many different traditional styles like country, old-time, singer songwriter, klezmer, Irish, Scottish, and country blues. I have also performed in both symphony and chamber orchestras and am comfortable teaching classical music.
